Pelvic Health
It’s easy to buy into the narrative that “this is your destiny” because we hear this narrative ALL THE TIME, but
Just because it is “common” doesn’t mean it is optimal health & function
if you only take away ONE thing from this, it’s that many pelvic health conditions in adults can IMPROVE if not resolve with pelvic health rehabilitation. Intervention is key to improve your pelvic health and overall habits to get you back to living your best life.
Did you know…
Pelvic Health Physical Therapy is a term for the specialty niche of the rehab world. Pelvic Health PT focuses on the rehabilitation of the pelvis / pelvic floor and the functions that this area of the body is responsible for: bladder health, bowel health, sexual health & function, pregnancy & postpartum healing, and even pelvic dysfunction as noted by pain.
Pelvic health therapy is perfect for the individual who is experiencing any of the following:
Urinary Incontinence (leakage)
The pregnant individual who is wanting to prepare their body for birth
pain in pregnancy: symphysis pubis dysfunction, SIJ or low back pain
Pain with intercourse, inserting a tampon, and/or a medically necessary GYN examination.
Postpartum rehab & healing after vaginal and c-section birth
Diastasis Recti Abdominus
stool consistency issues: constipation or diarrhea
pelvic organ prolapse
Pelvic Pain: pain with orgasm, arousal, difficulty achieving orgasm, pain with sitting (pelvic floor, tailbone, etc); this includes MALE pelvic pain too.
Our Process
-
Listen
It all begins with your story. Hearing your history, your ENTIRE history, is the foundation of every new session. You will have uninterrupted time with your therapist to share your story.
-
Assess
We value a “whole body” approach. Everything is connected, so our evaluation process has dedicated time to gather information about your system, your habits & your life. Sometimes it can take 2 sessions to get all the information.
-
Communicate
Communication is key & one of our core values. We view education as empowerment and we pride ourselves on laying out all the information gathered during the listening & assessment stages so you can make an informed decision in your care.
-
Collaborate
Once you have all the information, we lay out the options on how to proceed to get you back to your goals. We see this as us collaborating with you in your care; teaming up to help you meet your goals
-
Treat
This is where the fun happens. We put in the work, change habits, view the world differently, challenge your system with new ways to move and gain strength, all with your goals in mind
-
Check Your Progress
This is where we check your progress. We are looking for change, even in the smallest degree every.single.session. We perform formal data point collections every 8ish sessions to track your growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the bottom of your pelvis. This group of muscles spans from the pubic symphysis in the front to the tailbone in the back and from hip to hip. This group of muscles is important for support of your pelvic organs; imperative for your pelvic function: peeing, pooping, sexual health and function, & birth; a big part of our stability as it is 1/4 of our core canister; and plays a role in our lymphatic system.
-
We are asked this question all the time. Honestly, many people do not know that pelvic health PT is an option for themselves or as a referral for their patients. Many of our clients hear about pelvic PT from a friend or even on social media.
-
The most important aspect of the examination or the initial evaluation is hearing your story. We allow for uninterrupted time to hear your story and also ask you questions about your pelvic health so we can have a deep understanding of where you are today and what your goals are. After we have this information, the objective portion of the first visit is looking at your range of motion, strength, breath work, coordination during functional movement, and pelvic floor musculature both externally and internally (if deemed appropriate for you). We truly will be looking from head to toe as everything is connected, so dont be surprised if we are looking at your neck/ jaw and/or your feet .
-
Most of our conditions are “common but not optimal” so things we see often in clinic include: urinary leakage (ex: leaking pee with coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercise, etc), Pregnancy aches and pains (ex: symphysis pubis dysfunction, low back pain, hip pain), postpartum rehabilitation (Diastasis Recti Abdominis, return to exercise, etc), Pain with intercourse, Childhood bedwetting and constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, and male pelvic pain conditions.
-
nope. Nothing is ever “necessary”. We see our examination techniques as an “ala-carte” mindset, meaning that we can pick and choose the tests and procedures that make the most sense for your ailments and also what you are comfortable with.
